There are just 2 weekends left to visit the White Rock Farmers’ Market! We know… we’re sad too! But as much as the farmers’ market feels like a summer activity, it really comes to life in the fall! Fall produce is plentiful and you can’t get any fresher than straight from the farm! In fact, most of the vegetables you see at the market were literally in the ground the day before. And fresher veggies mean more flavour in your recipes. Fall is also when local mushrooms start to show up at the market. Mushroom foraging is one of those activities where you really need to know your stuff, so we love it when we see local chanterelles and oyster mushrooms from a trusted market vendor.
Here are some of the in-season fruits and vegetables you might find at the fall market: squash, beets, pumpkins, potatoes, broccoli, brussels sprouts, turnips, pears, apples, and more.
And let’s not forget about all of the other yummy items that are “in-season” at the fall market! Chocolate and coffee are always in season. Visit Meru Chocolates for single-origin, filled chocolates inspired by the majestic Mount Meru in Tanzania. Pop by Mukasi Coffee & Co for locally roasted, small-batch beans. Sample a new spirit, like Amaro (Italian for “bitter”) a herbal liqueur from North Vancouver based, The Woods Spirit Co. or Baiju, a Chinese hard liquor (and the most consumed spirit in the world) from Surrey’s Dragon Mist Distillery. Cooler weather is on the way, so be sure to stock up on soul-warming prepared foods like empanadas packed with Latin flavours from the Empanada Gal, perfect pierogies from Nina’s Pierogies and fresh pasta from Pastaggio. And don’t miss the sweet treats, like churchkhela, a traditional Georgian snack made with fruits and nuts from the Churchkhela booth, pain au chocolate from Ca Croustille Bakery, a BIG (seriously, they’re so big) cookie from BAK’D Cookies, and everyone’s favourite kettle corn from Gary’s Kettle Corn!
The White Rock Farmers Market is Sunday, October 8 and 15 from 10 am to 2 pm in Miramar Plaza (15154 Russell Avenue) in Uptown White Rock.
